You may have heard on the media about cases of cryptosporidium that is now restricted to the Queenstown CBD, Fernhill and Sunshine Bay areas only.

We are fortunate that Arrowtown and the surrounding area's water supply is unaffected and is safe to drink.

There are two theories as to why the town is named Arrowtown. One is that the river behind the town flows swiftly like an arrow.

The first jail in Arrowtown was simply a log. You were chained up to it. The later stone jail still exists and is in Cardigan Street. It is New Zealand’s 4th oldest jail.

The Chinese Settlement was established in 1867-8 and was in existence until the mid 1930’s. The site underwent an archaeological excavation in 1984.

There has been a fire station on the current site since 1890. The hand drawn hose reel was used until the 1940’s.

Arrowtown was originally known as Fox’s. named after William Fox an early gold discoverer. Then it was known as The Arrow and later Arrowtown.
