Ask four people what’s the best season to come to Arrowtown and you’ll get four different answers. The obvious answer is autumn, for the colourful foliage and popular Autumn Festival. Then there’s winter for the snow, or summer for lazy days by the lake.
But more and more people now declare the best time is spring…and here are five good reasons why.
Arrowtown has hundreds of fruit trees, but before you can get cherries, plums or apricots you have to have blossoms. In September and October the streets, parks and gardens are decorated with delicate pink and white blooms, making for a scene almost as photogenic as the autumn foliage season!
For five weeks this spring, Insta-worthy moments will abound as Arrowtown's shops and restaurants burst into flower for the first time for Arrowtown in Bloom. In the run-up to the Arrowtown Spring Show – that’s a good old-fashioned Kiwi flower show on 27 September – a team of florists and horticultural society volunteers will festoon the businesses of Buckingham Street with stunning floral art installations that bring the romance of spring to the streets of our historic town.
The blossoming of main street is just one part of a wider celebration of this season of growth and creativity. There’s also the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society’s Spring Arts Festival. This festival is a fantastic opportunity to hear from working artists and writers, and get involved in making art yourself. There’s a rare chance to tour the sculptures at The Hills Golf Club, a night of dancing and even a couple of gardening workshops.
The spring weather in Arrowtown would delight Goldilocks – it’s not too hot and not too cold. In fact it’s perfect for hopping on a bike or e-bike and going for a spin on the Queenstown Trail to Gibbston and lunch in the sun at a winery.
If biking’s not your thing, the Queenstown Trail tracks are shared tracks – how about a walk around serene Lake Hayes or a stroll beside the crystal-clear Arrow River. If you want to head higher, there’s always the short haul up Feehly Hill to some pretty awesome views.
If you want to get away from the crowds, come to Arrowtown in spring. The word hasn’t got out yet how beautiful it is at this time of year!Photo credits:Blossom: Todd WeeksBike: Gibbston Valley WineryFeehly Hill: Mikayla Evans
