If a summer Christmas is new to you, why not make the most of the novelty by spending it outside. Fill a daypack with yummy treats, lace up your walking shoes and find a picnic place with a view. You’ll find some great spots on the Sawpit Gully Loop, New Chums Track and Mt Beetham, at the top of Tobins Track. If you need to buy last-minute supplies, the Night n Day grocery store in Buckingham St will be open.
And you can reward yourself for your efforts with handmade ice cream from the Patagonia Chocolates Café in Ramshaw Lane between noon and 6 pm!
The New Orleans Hotel will be serving a slap up Christmas roast dinner, Kiwi style. The menu is packed with local favourites like roast lamb, sliced ham and pavlova – and if the holiday season means turkey and Christmas pudding to you, that’s on offer too.
Arrowtown’s reconstructed Chinese Settlement is open 24/7 and is well worth a visit. You’ll learn the fascinating story of the Chinese gold miners who eked out a living here during the 1870s. Try to imagine living in the tiny stone huts or the lean-tos set into the cliff face – it’ll help you appreciate the luxuries of a 21st century Christmas!
Lake Hayes Reserve is the perfect place to spend a relaxing Christmas afternoon with friends and family. Go for a walk around the lake (it’s about 9 km), break out the folding chairs or spread out a picnic blanket, throw a frisbee, kick a football around, go for a swim if the conditions are right.
Let’s not forget what Christmas is all about. Everyone is welcome to celebrate the birth of Christ with the local community at one of our three historic churches.
St John’s Presbyterian Church on the corner of Durham and Berkshire Streets has a candlelit carol service at 11.15 pm on Christmas Eve and a service at 10 am on Christmas Day.
Near St John’s, in Berkshire Street, tiny St Paul’s Anglican Church has Holy Communion and carols at 8.30 pm on Christmas Eve as well as services at 8 am and 9.30 am on Christmas Day On Christmas Eve there will be a Christmas vigil mass at 10 pm at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hertford Street, followed by mass at 9.30 am and 11 am on Christmas Day.
